Game rained out
By Adam Rubin
Sunday's game has been rained out. The Mets and Giants will play a single-admission doubleheader at 4:10 p.m Monday.
Spot starter Miguel Batista will oppose Tim Lincecum in Game 1. Dillon Gee opposes Madison Bumgarner in Game 2.
Johan Santana will be pushed from Monday until Tuesday's series opener against the Miami Marlins, giving him an additional day of rest.
The Mets would have needed a spot starter Friday in Denver anyway had Gee and Santana pitched in Monday's doubleheader, so Batista would have been required either way. Using Batista on Monday also pushes Mike Pelfrey from Thursday's game against the Marlins, against whom he has struggled, to Friday in Denver.
"We talked all spring long about making sure that we keep our five starters in sync," Terry Collins said. "... We talked to Johan. He was on board with it. As a matter of fact, the worst thing we can do is screw up everybody else. So we decided to go that way."
Collins added that Santana actually has thrown two bullpen sessions since Tuesday's abbreviated start in Atlanta, rather than the standard one session, "so there's nothing wrong with giving him another day. ... But it's about the whole staff, and not just Johan, for sure."
Sunday's Tom Seaver bobblehead giveaway instead will be May 5 against the Arizona Diamondbacks.
Only Monday's tickets (marked Monday April 23, Game 10) will be honored for the doubleheader.
The Marlins also were rained out in D.C. So the pitching matchups for Jose Reyes' midweek return to Citi Field are now:
Tuesday: Santana vs. Josh Johnson
Wednesday: R.A. Dickey vs. Mark Buehrle
Thursday: Jon Niese vs. Ricky Nolasco
Here's more directly from the Mets:
Fans holding paid tickets from today’s game (marked “Sunday, April 22 – Game 9”) wishing to attend tomorrow's doubleheader may exchange at the Citi Field Ticket Windows for admission tomorrow.
In addition, fans can exchange their tickets for those comparable in price and location -- pending availability -- to a Mets 2012 home game. That includes today’s Tom Seaver bobblehead promotion presented by Citi, which has been rescheduled for Saturday, May 5 when the Mets host the Arizona Diamondbacks at 4:05 p.m., and the next Mr. Met Dash, where kids 12 and under can run the bases at Citi Field following the game, Sunday, May 6 after the Mets play the Diamondbacks at 1:10 p.m.
Tickets can be exchanged by mail or at the Citi Field Advanced Ticket Windows starting tomorrow. For complete information, please visit Mets.com or call (718) 507-TIXX.
Meanwhile, the new collective bargaining agreement allows for 26- rather than 25-man rosters under certain situations for doubleheaders, but that will not apply to the Mets and Giants on Monday. The new rule only is for day-night doubleheaders that are at least two days after the rainout.
