Mets sign catcher Powell to minors deal
By Adam Rubin
The Mets have signed 30-year-old catcher Landon Powell to a minor league deal with a spring-training invite.
Powell, a switch-hitter, had a .207 average with 10 homers and 45 RBIs in 363 at-bats with the Oakland Athletics from 2009 through 2011. He appeared in 107 games at catcher and eight games at first base.
At Triple-A Oklahoma City in the Houston Astros system last season, Powell hit .251 with eight homers and 38 RBIs in 239 at-bats.
Powell likely will back up Travis d'Arnaud at Triple-A Las Vegas to open the season, with John Buck and Anthony Recker serving as the catchers with the major league club.
