'Possible' for Mejia to enter soon

By Adam Rubin

PORT ST. LUCIE, Fla. -- Sandy Alderson said Monday that right-hander Jenrry Mejia may be permitted to enter the United States and report to Mets camp before Major League Baseball completes an age and identity investigation on behalf of the U.S. government in Santo Domingo, Dominican Republic.

"It's possible they'll issue the visa before the investigation is completed," Alderson said. "We just don't know at this point. In the meantime, he is working out at the [Mets'] academy in the Dominican."

Alderson has said he believes the investigation is random, and perhaps fueled by higher standards of new staff at the U.S. Embassy in the Dominican Republic.

"It's unusual for someone who has been on the roster as long as he has been on the 40-man roster, and for someone who has been to the United States as frequently as he has been to the United States, to be investigated," Alderson said.
