Happy 50th, Bobby Bo!

By Jeremy Lundblad, ESPN Stats & Information

With Bobby Bonilla turning 50 on Saturday, perhaps it’s a good time to revisit his unique contract situation.

In July 2011, the Mets paid the first of 25 annual payments to Bonilla: $1,193,248.20.

In other words, Bonilla will get that amount each year until 2035, when he is 72. That’s how old Joe Torre is right now.

Only in America ...
Could Jordan still play at 50?

Bonilla doesn’t need to.

Side note: Bonilla was born in the Bronx six days after Jordan was born in Brooklyn.

In case you need a refresher, here’s the explanation from ESPN The Magazine last year.

Fun facts:

• There are only nine players on the Mets who will earn more than Bonilla this season.

• He’s still owed just over $27.4M. Only David Wright and Johan Santana are owed more by the Mets.

• That $27.4M is likely far more than the Astros’ roster will earn this season (currently under $10M in guaranteed deals with the final number expected to be around $20M by Opening Day).

• Only three Astros will make more than Bonilla this season: Bud Norris, Carlos Pena, Jose Veras.
