Johan to 60-day DL not option

By Adam Rubin

PORT ST. LUCIE, Fla. -- While it is entirely possible Johan Santana will be absent into June, the Mets apparently do not want to commit now and place him on the 60-day disabled list, a team insider told

Players placed on the 60-day DL do not count toward the 40-man roster. But the Mets do not intend, at least right now, to use the 60-day DL to help address their clogged roster.

The Mets likely need to open four 40-man roster spots in coming days to add Scott Atchison, Marlon Byrd, LaTroy Hawkins, Aaron Laffey and Omar Quintanilla.

Unlike the 15-day DL, the 60-day DL cannot be backdated into spring training. So a 60-day DL stint would resign a player to missing April and May.
