DH will get excess outfielder into lineup

By Adam Rubin

Terry Collins said he will continue to mix and match his outfielders "for now." But, the manager added, having the designated hitter in Minnesota next weekend during interleague play will provide room to start four outfielders a day. Collins did not specify whom he would use at DH, but presumably Lucas Duda would be the primary candidate, with Marlon Byrd or Jordany Valdespin alternatives, since they are the weakest links in the field.

After using a Duda-Collin Cowgill-Byrd defensive alignment the first three games, Collins has used three different outfield setups against the Miami Marlins, with the only constant being Duda in left field.

Sunday: Cowgill cf, Baxter rf

Collins said he's using the mixing and matching essentially to audition combinations.

"Right now it's an easy way to figure out who we want to play," the manager said.

Collins acknowledged his preference would be to have a stable lineup, which is what he had intended only a week ago.

"In a perfect world you'd like to have your three guys out there," Collins said.
