Laffey surrendered three runs on 10 hits, a walk and a hit batter in 4 1/3 innings against the Miami Marlins on Sunday at Citi Field. As soon as he has recovered from that outing, he temporarily will be available in the bullpen between starts. Laffey threw 90 pitches Sunday.
Terry Collins sounded like Laffey may be in the rotation for a while. Shaun Marcum, who received injections in his neck Thursday, played catch today in Port St. Lucie and may step onto a mound Tuesday, but is not close to returning.
"He's been throwing, but he's not anywhere close to getting into a game," Collins said.
As for how many starts Laffey may get, Collins added: "He's going to be the guy until we figure out when Shaun's going to be back, or if he's going to be back, or where we stand. There's no number in mind of how many starts. It could be three. It could be seven. I don't know."
