Mass demotions Mets' first since '04
By Adam Rubin
NEW YORK -- The last time the Mets sent three players to the minors on the same day?
That was July 31, 2004, according to Lee Singer of ESPN Stats & Information. And unlike with the demotions of Ike Davis, Mike Baxter and Robert Carson, those transactions primarily were due to roster shuffling as the result of trades, not performance.
It was at that trading deadline that the Mets acquired Kris Benson and Victor Zambrano among others and had to clear room. So Jae Weong Seo, Dan Wheeler and Tyler Yates were dispatched to Triple-A Norfolk.
Demoting three or more players simultaneously also happened in two other instances over the past 20 years, also coinciding with the trade deadline:
Mike Bacsik, Satoru Komiyama and Marco Scutaro were demoted on Aug. 1, 2002. And Benny Agbayani, Mike Kinkade and Vance Wilson were demoted on Aug. 1, 1998.
Note, though: That only includes transactions in which three or more players were directly sent to the minors. It does not incorporate players designated for assignment, released, waived or outrighted.
