Source: Burke to Philly, signaling Niese DL

By Adam Rubin

ATLANTA -- After the bullpen tossed 5 2/3 scoreless innings in relief of Jonathon Niese on Thursday, Terry Collins noted the Mets needed a fresh bullpen arm.

The manager will get his wish.

Right-hander Greg Burke is expected to rejoin the Mets this weekend in Philly from Triple-A Las Vegas, a source told

Despite recent success, Burke had been demoted June 15 when the Mets were compelled to put Carlos Torres on the major league roster or lose him.

Because Burke has not spent 10 days in the minors, he can only rejoin the Mets if a major league player lands on the DL. So it seems clear the Mets will play it safe with Niese and DL him.

Niese is due to be examined Friday in New York for shoulder pain.
