Morning briefing: Another wasted gem

By Matt Ehalt

FIRST PITCH: Poor Matt Harvey.

In what's become a common theme this season, the Mets wasted another fantastic outing from their ace as the bullpen imploded in a 6-4 loss to the Nats on Friday night. Harvey gave the Mets a 4-1 lead after seven, striking out 11 and giving up just three hits, but the bullpen gave up five in the final two innings.

The Mets are now 14-24 at home, the worst mark in the majors.

Saturday's news reports:

" Read game recaps in the Daily News, Post, Star-Ledger, Newsday, New York Times and the Wall Street Journal.

" Zack Wheeler is preparing for his first start at Citi Field on Sunday against the Nationals. Both of Wheeler's starts thus far have come on the road. Read more in the Daily News, Post, and Newsday.

" Josh Satin went 3-for-3 in the loss. He also drove in a pair of runs, tying a career-high.

" Marlon Byrd had another solid game.

" Eric Young has played well since the Mets acquired the outfielder. He went 1-for-5 in his first home game as a Met.

" Ruben Tejada played in his first rehab game on Friday night for the Gulf Coast League Mets. He went 1-for-2.

" Brandon Nimmo is a finalist for the All-Star Futures Team. Nimmo, the team's first-round pick in 2011, is playing with Single-A Savannah.

" Harvey should start the All-Star Game, according to columnists John Harper in the Daily News, and Kevin Kernan in the Post.

" The Mets actually have averaged fewer fans for Harvey's starts than other home games this season.

" From the bloggers: Mets Report writes the Mets should consider trading Ike Davis to the Yankees. ...Faith and Fear in Flushing writes the Mets are having a tribute of sorts to the 1973 season.

BIRTHDAYS: Hall of Famer Harmon Killebrew was born today. Killebrew, who died in 2011, would have been 77.
