Wheeler off-limits in first-half finale

By Adam Rubin

PITTSBURGH -- Starting pitchers often are a consideration to use out of the bullpen on the final day of the first half. That will not be the case with Zack Wheeler, who last pitched Wednesday in San Francisco, and who is not scheduled to open his second half until Saturday.

"If he was a six-year veteran, you probably would," Terry Collins said. "But you're not going to take a kid who you're going to limit his workload anyway on the season and take a chance in putting him in a position that he has probably never done in his minor league career, or his entire career -- and that's bring him out of the bullpen."

The worn-out Mets relief corps could use the help, but Collins said he has no intention of using Wheeler.

"You've got to turn to those relievers and say: 'Get in there and get the aspirin, because we're going to need you,'" Collins said.
