MIAMI -- An American League club that has spoken with the Mets was told the New York club would need to "win" the trade in order to part with Marlon Byrd. So it is entirely possible, given the Mets' demands, that Byrd remains a Met after Wednesday's 4 p.m. non-waiver trade deadline.

Byrd continues to show his value as that deadline approaches. He had an RBI single to tie the score, then hustled to score all the way from first base on Ike Davis' ensuing double to right field as the Mets posted three runs in the seventh and beat the Miami Marlins, 6-5, Monday night.

The Mets had lost five straight games to the Marlins.

"Teuf is aggressive over there and makes some great reads," Byrd said, referring to third-base coach Tim Teufel. "Off the bat I thought I had to get a good jump and make sure I had the right route going into third base coming off of second."
