Why no Flores? Range issue

By Adam Rubin

Think fans want to see Wilmer Flores in the majors now that David Wright has landed on the DL? Here is a small sampling of an overwhelming number of tweets questioning why Flores, who turns 22 on Tuesday, has not received a call:

@AdamRubinESPN correct me if I'm wrong. Isn't Flores' natural position at 3rd?? Why isn't he up?

Flores is hitting .320 with 14 homers and 85 RBIs in 412 at-bats with Triple-A Las Vegas. And Terry Collins said he does believe Flores would hit at the major league level.

The problem? Collins, like scouts, noted players need to be in the field, too. And there is huge concern within the organization about what has been labeled nonexistent range and foot speed.

In fact, Triple-A manager Wally Backman mostly has started using Flores at first base of late, after Flores had been manning second base for much of the season.
