Mejia leaves game with elbow discomfort
By Adam Rubin
SAN DIEGO -- Jenrry Mejia left Saturday's start against the San Diego Padres after delivering his second pitch of the fourth inning with what the team announced is right elbow discomfort.
Mejia has stated he needs surgery after the season to remove a bone spur from the elbow. He spent the first half of the season on the disabled list with discomfort.
Assuming Mejia is unable to proceed in the rotation, Carlos Torres could slide back into a starting role. The Mets then could call up a bullpen arm from Triple-A -- potentially Greg Burke.
Jeremy Hefner is on the DL with an MCL strain in his right elbow, and will be evaluated Monday to determine if he needs Tommy John surgery.
Sandy Alderson is on the record saying minor league candidates Rafael Montero, Jacob deGrom and Noah Syndergaard are not optimal rotation fill-ins because they are approaching tight innings caps this season.
