Mets plan to test Martinez behind plate
By Adam Rubin
NEW YORK -- With the Detroit Tigers losing the designated hitter in the NL ballpark, and with Alex Avila on the DL with a concussion and backup Brayan Pena nursing a sore toe, usual DH Victor Martinez finds himself behind the plate in a major league game on Friday night for the first time since Aug. 4, 2011.
Let’s just say the Mets plan to gauge Martinez’s rustiness.
“If we get on, we’re going to test him,” Terry Collins said. “You’ve pretty much got to give it a shot. We know he hasn’t caught in a long time. So if we get the right people on, yeah, we might give it a shot.”
