Travis, Dice-K to get acquainted on fly
By Adam Rubin
NEW YORK -- How is rookie catcher Travis d’Arnaud approaching dealing with Daisuke Matsuzaka, a pitcher he had never caught before?
“Research,” d’Arnaud said Friday afternoon. “You look on the computer, see what he’s got. That’s pretty much it. I’ll come up with an idea of how I think he’s going to throw. And then before the game I’ll talk to him and [interpreter Jeff] Cutler and see what he thinks.”
Terry Collins advised Matsuzaka on Friday to take charge of the game plan.
“In Japanese baseball the catcher controls the game,” Collins said. “Over here, especially right now, he’s going to have to help us guide him through the games because he knows what he wants to do.
“I told Daisuke today: When you sit down with [pitching coach] Dan [Warthen] and Travis tonight, this kid is really bright. He gets it. And he gets it fast. Explain what you like to do, how you like to pitch, and come up with a game plan that fits your characteristics before the game starts and Travis d’Arnaud will stick with it. I’m not concerned about that.”
