Wheeler loses control after leaving bullpen
By Adam Rubin
NEW YORK -- Zack Wheeler walked a career-high six batters and suffered the loss in Tuesday's 8-5 defeat against the San Francisco Giants.
After allowing four runs in five innings, Wheeler's home ERA (4.73) is now more than double his ERA away from Citi Field (2.32).
"Certainly it was unexpected what we saw tonight, because this guy has pitched so much better than how he did tonight," Terry Collins said. "The one thing we've been raving about is that he's been commanding his pitches. And tonight he couldn't find the zone and fell behind and ended up getting hurt by it. But, again, he didn't let the game get out of hand. He kept us in it. We didn't pitch very good at the end."
Said Wheeler: "I was awesome in the bullpen. I told [pitching coach] Dan [Warthen] in the bullpen, 'I'm kind of worried.' I was literally hitting every spot and all that kind of stuff, and that never happens. I went out into the game and it just wasn't there tonight."
