Zack on borderline between 1, 2 starts
By Adam Rubin
NEW YORK -- How many starts Zack Wheeler has remaining in his season apparently depends upon how well he pitches Monday in Cincinnati. At least, it depends upon how deep he pitches that day.
Terry Collins said Wheeler likely would be shut down after Monday's start if he logs seven or eight innings against the Reds. If he has a shorter outing, he should be able to start the regular-season finale as well, against the Milwaukee Brewers on Sept. 29.
Wheeler currently sits at 168 2/3 innings this season between the majors and minors. Team officials do not want him to exceed 180 innings.
"He's right on the borderline of where we want him to be," Collins said. "If he goes out his next start and gets seven or eight, that could be it."
