Lagares named top Mets defensive player
By Adam Rubin
Juan Lagares was recognized Thursday as the top defensive player on the Mets. Each team had one player selected as part of the Wilson Defensive Player of the Year Award.
Overall, Arizona Diamondbacks outfielder Gerardo Parra was named the top defender in the NL, with Boston Red Sox second baseman Dustin Pedroia named the top defender in the AL. The Diamondbacks were named the NL's top defensive team, while the Baltimore Orioles and Kansas City Royals shared the honor in the AL.
Lagares set a franchise rookie record with 15 outfield assists, despite appearing in only 108 major league games. He had a 3.5 dWAR, second only to Milwaukee's Carlos Gomez (4.6) among NL center fielders.
Because center field was a deeper defensive position, Lagares was not one of the NL's three finalists for the Gold Glove, whereas Eric Young Jr. was among the top three in left field.
