Mets out on Phil Hughes

By Adam Rubin

Free-agent right-hander Phil Hughes is likely to get a two-year deal, with the Mets out of the bidding because they are unwilling to guarantee more than one year, George King reported in the Post.

Hughes earned $7.15 million with the Yankees in 2013. The Los Angeles Angels, Minnesota Twins, Seattle Mariners and Kansas City Royals reportedly have expressed interest.

Hughes went 4-14 with a 5.19 ERA last season while logging 145 2/3 innings.

“Look where the market is for starting pitchers,” a talent evaluator told King. "He is 27 and has never had shoulder or elbow surgery. If I was him, I wouldn’t want a one-year deal. Two years ago, he won 16 games.”
