Mets roster projection: 2014.03

By Adam Rubin

PORT ST. LUCIE, Fla. -- After Kyle Farnsworth's less-than-inspiring showing Saturday, which included fastball velocity sitting in the 86-88 mph range, I'm not entirely eliminating him from Opening Day roster candidacy. In fact, Terry Collins indicated Farnsworth and Jose Valverde will be afforded every opportunity to make a good impression.

Still, scouts do not think either has much left, so I'm dropping at least Farnsworth for now from the Opening Day roster projection. We'll ultimately have an early verdict on him, since he has a March 23 out if he is not going to be on the major-league roster.

If I were gutsy, I'd put Seattle Mariners infielder Nick Franklin on as the shortstop, with Ruben Tejada as the backup. But that's too much to do right now.

Collins affirmed that Matsuzaka and John Lannan are the frontrunners for fifth starter. And the smart money is on Dice-K based on last year's final four games.

So the lone change from the last projection is Jenrry Mejia making the team as a reliever. That still only leaves one lefty in the bullpen, but neither Josh Edgin nor Jack Leathersich has shown enough early to justify projection on the Opening Day roster.

Ike Davis remains off the list for now, although a Mets official recently said there were no active trade discussions. If Davis isn't traded, Lucas Duda would seem likely to make the team on the bench, with occasional outfield work. Andrew Brown would be pushed off.
