Flores to get short start soon
By Adam Rubin
PORT ST. LUCIE, Fla. -- Wilmer Flores is expected to start at shortstop early next week. It will mark his first time starting at the position in a game since 2011, when he played for Class A St. Lucie.
Terry Collins has suggested Flores' bat might be helpful for the bench if he can prove he is competent handling shortstop on occasion. Still, insiders believe the organization is much more likely to place Flores at Triple-A Las Vegas where he can get regular at-bats.
The bench, barring an outside addition that changes the dynamic, should include Anthony Recker, Josh Satin, Lucas Duda and Juan Lagares. The Mets then might have to decide between Anthony Seratelli and Omar Quintanilla as Ruben Tejada's understudy at shortstop -- with Seratelli potentially having the edge if he can demonstrate this spring training that his bat is worth carrying.
Flores already has finished a couple of Grapefruit League games at shortstop.
