Mets roster projection 2014.04

By Adam Rubin

PORT ST. LUCIE, Fla. -- Well, it will be difficult to trade Ike Davis if he cannot play because of a right-calf strain. So for purposes of our latest projection, let's make him the Opening Day starter at first base.

If Davis does remain part of the organization on Opening Day and is healthy, it seems pretty clear that both he and Lucas Duda will be on the major-league roster -- not one in Triple-A. If Davis is hurt, add Andrew Brown to the projection below instead.

Similarly, no matter how the Eric Young Jr. versus Juan Lagares starter battle resolves itself, both should be on the team. And both lineups probably end up getting used anyway.

So the biggest questions seem to be:

• Who is the backup shortstop (assuming Ruben Tejada remains the No. 1 guy and is not bumped to the backup role by an acquisition)?

• Can Wilmer Flores convince the Mets to carry him on the bench as the backup middle infielder?

• Will both Jose Valverde and Kyle Farnsworth make the team, even though scouts have been underwhelmed so far?

• And if Valverde or Farnsworth does not, who sneaks onto the roster -- John Lannan as a second lefty ... or Jenrry Mejia or Gonzalez Germen?

Meanwhile, it is worth noting: Mejia had believed, based on conversations between his reps and team officials this offseason, that he had the inside track for the fifth-starter's job. Mets people have disputed that, though. And the educated guess from observers unaffiliated with the club is that Daisuke Matsuzaka still seems the most likely choice for that role to start the season.
