Mets roster projection 2014.05

By Adam Rubin

PORT ST. LUCIE, Fla. -- One day after doing roster projection 2014.04, ESPNNewYork.com has some new info. So let's take yet another stab at it:

The current thinking is the Mets do plan to carry John Lannan in the bullpen as a long man and test him out as a second lefty in strategic matchups.

Also, as of now, Jose Valverde will make the team, with Kyle Farnsworth on the outside looking in. Still, the Mets will continue to give Farnsworth rope to prove he merits a spot.

The club also currently favors Daisuke Matsuzaka for the fifth spot because he is a known commodity, but team officials will give Jenrry Mejia an opportunity to win the job. The club does not want to continue shifting Mejia between starter and reliever, so it is very conceivable Mejia opens the season in the Triple-A rotation. But assuming Dice-K takes the fifth, there would be a meeting late in camp to determine if Mejia ought to be a reliever and break camp with the Mets -- with some permanency to that role going forward.

As for backup shortstop, scouts say Anthony Seratelli is not catching up to fastballs, and is having difficulty with his quickness on double plays. So the new projection puts Omar Quintanilla onto the roster over Seratelli, while still believing the Mets may upgrade at shortstop and push Ruben Tejada to that backup role.
