Brown demoted to clear spot for Abreu
By Adam Rubin
NEW YORK -- Andrew Brown was shipped to Triple-A Las Vegas before Monday's series opener against the St. Louis Cardinals, clearing the roster spot for the promotion of Bobby Abreu.
Brown was hitting .185 with one homer and five RBIs in 27 at-bats.
The Mets decided to have the lefty-hitting Abreu replace the righty-hitting Brown over the lefty-hitting Kirk Nieuwenhuis, so Nieuwenhuis likely survives until Juan Lagares returns from the disabled list.
Brown had survived multiple potential demotions this season, including thanks for Chris Young's DL stint and the trade of Ike Davis.
