TC: Familia OK, just unused
By Adam Rubin
NEW YORK -- Jeurys Familia has not appeared in a game since last Friday, while Terry Collins heavily uses fellow bullpen members such as Carlos Torres, Scott Rice and Daisuke Matsuzaka.
Still, the manager indicated, Familia is OK health-wise. With Torres and Matsuzaka assuming late-inning roles, Familia now has the long-man role initially held by John Lannan. And with starting pitchers going deep, there has not been an opportunity. Plus, Collins needed Familia available in case Bartolo Colon (back) or Jenrry Mejia (blister) had an issue arise that prevented him from making a start.
Collins acknowledged he does need to get Familia into a game very soon, though.
The manager noted Torres and Matsuzaka would not be used Friday night, and that Rice would have to be limited to one lefty batter. Torres has worked four of the past five games -- tossing a combined 100 pitches.
