Abreu not leading man consideration

By Adam Rubin

CHICAGO -- Bobby Abreu has a team-leading .397 on-base percentage, albeit in only 63 plate appearances. Still, Terry Collins emphatically said Tuesday that Abreu is not a consideration for interim leadoff hitter.

It's not about the 40-year-old Abreu's age, although Collins does not want to put him in the outfield too often.

The manager's objection to considering Abreu as a leadoff hitter?

"Because he drives in runs for us," Collins said.

Matt den Dekker starts in the leadoff spot Tuesday for a second straight day since Juan Lagares landed on the disabled list with a rib-cage strain. Collins said he will take the leadoff role "day by day."

On den Dekker, Collins said: "He's going to play some games. I don't know how many."

As for Abreu, Collins suggested playing too often is catching up with the veteran.

"He's running a little out of fuel right now," Collins said. "... With some rest, I'll tell you, he's going to be valuable for us."
