deGrom batting eighth tied to Grandy
By Adam Rubin
MIAMI -- Terry Collins said batting Jacob deGrom eighth again on Saturday really is fueled by wanting to place Curtis Granderson in the leadoff spot.
If Granderson bats leadoff, the most logical place for Eric Young Jr. essentially is as the second leadoff hitter, at No. 9, according to the manager.
It also works, at least in theory, because deGrom is capable of handling the bat. He’s 5-for-12 with a walk in his major league career.
“Curtis Granderson has a .475 on-base [percentage] this month,” Collins said. “I think we need to get him up there. And that’s what it came down to. He’s third in the league in walks. He’s swinging good. ... You’ve got Grandy getting on base. You’ve got Murph who's getting on base. And here comes David.”
