High pitch count unavoidable for Zack?
By Adam Rubin
NEW YORK -- Zack Wheeler is 4-0 with a 1.93 ERA in his past eight starts entering Friday’s assignment against the Chicago Cubs. Yet Wheeler has expressed frustration at not completing seven innings in any of those outings, while averaging 111 pitches per start.
Terry Collins suggests high pitch counts may be unavoidable because of Wheeler’s style.
“It’s always going to be high, because he’s the one guy who strikes people out on our staff,” Collins said Friday afternoon. “… What I think is going to keep it down is if he stays around the strike zone. The issue becomes how many times he gets to 3-2. That’s what helps that pitch count build up. But, gosh, he’s been pitching so well, I’ll take what he can give us tonight.”
