GM: 40 crunch impediment to Noah call-up
By Adam Rubin
NEW YORK -- Sandy Alderson suggested a 40-man roster crunch is the biggest impediment to Noah Syndergaard getting a September call-up.
Jeff Roberson/Associated PressSandy Alderson said a tight 40-man roster is working against a September call-up for Noah Syndergaard.
Still, a team insider insisted there had not been a definitive determination about whether Syndergaard would receive a promotion, despite reports he likely would be passed over. One reason against a call-up is not wanting to reward Syndergaard for a less-than-stellar season (4.85 ERA, 1.504 WHIP with Las Vegas).
The Mets currently are at 38 on the 40-man roster.
“There may be something to be gained from the kind of familiarity he may acquire during that month, just what goes on at the major league level -- maybe an occasional appearance, maybe just out of the bullpen,” Alderson said. “But there are countervailing considerations also. One of those is our roster situation. We don’t have 40-man roster spots readily available for everybody we potentially want to see in September.”
Syndergaard will need to be added to the 40-man roster this offseason to shield him from the Rule 5 draft.
