WHAT IT MEANS: Former St. John’s center Bill Wennington did not get to sing “Take Me Out to the Ballgame” at Wrigley Field. The game was halted with two out in the top of the seventh inning because of rain -- one out from the Seventh Inning Stretch. Cubs manager Mike Quade argued with the umpires as the tarp was being pulled. The Mets did snap a three-game losing streak with the rain-shortened, 7-4 victory.
WILD SIDE: Cubs right-hander Justin Berg threw 12 pitches -- all balls -- during a five-run second inning by the Mets, which staked them to a 6-4 lead. Carlos Beltran delivered a two-run double. Jason Bay, Daniel Murphy and Justin Turner consecutively walked during the stretch against Berg, who had entered after a quick hook for starter Casey Coleman. The walks to Murphy and Turner forced in runs.
The last pitcher in the majors to throw 12 or more pitches and no strikes: Sergio Mitre for Florida on Aug. 10, 2006 against Washington (also 0-for-12).
OH GEE: After surrendering two-run doubles by Reed Johnson and Alfonso Soriano in a four-run first inning by the Cubs, Dillon Gee tossed five scoreless frames to improve to 4-0. Gee had walked two batters in the first inning, both of whom eventually scored. He retired 16 of the final 18 batters he faced. Gee also produced a sacrifice fly to account for the Mets’ final run. It was the second RBI of his career.
K-ROD TRACKER: Francisco Rodriguez did not appear in the rain-shortened affair. He has finished 18 of the Mets’ 48 games. K-Rod needs to finish 37 of the team’s remaining 114 games for his contract to vest at $17.5 million for 2012. He is on pace for 61 games finished, six over the threshold for the vesting option to kick in.
WHAT’S NEXT: R.A. Dickey (2-5, 4.71 ERA) opposes Carlos Zambrano (4-2, 4.88) in Thursday’s matinee rubber game.
