Collins says Mookie not afterthought

Terry Collins asked to clarify one thing about his coaching staff: Mookie Wilson was not a second choice for first base coach behind Moises Alou. The manager sensed that perception was out there. So Collins brought up the subject during Tuesday's holiday party. He acknowledged checking with Alou to see if he would be interested, but the manager insisted that did not constitute an offer.

"I don't want to make it sound like Mookie Wilson was a second choice," Collins said. "Mookie Wilson was not a second choice. I called Moises Alou to see if he had interest in being a coach. He really didn't at that particular time. I hope it wasn't construed like I offered him the job. That was not true. I asked him, 'Hey, do you have interest?' And you know him -- he would have brought a lot to the table, a lot to the party. But I had talked to Mookie Wilson long before about the possibility of him being a coach."
