You wouldn't know it from the way the Mets played this weekend, but their defensive play has been excellent in one regard this season.

Our first official check of Baseball Tonight's Web Gem Scoreboard indicates that the Mets enter Monday leading the majors in Web Gem points with 38, and Total Gems with 13. Their nearest competitors are the Cincinnati Reds and the Tampa Bay Rays.

Web Gems are tallied via fan voting each day on the Baseball Tonight Clubhouse page. Fans can watch and vote on the previous days best gems (nominated by Baseball Tonight's analysts) until 5 pm eastern time. The winner for each vote is announced on that night's show.

Players accumulate points during the season based on the voting. Finishing first nets five points, second-best nets four points, all the way down to one point for the fifth-best gem.

This season, fans can track the Web Gem standings for every player in baseball at this link. The spreadsheet features tabs for both team and individual scoring.

Ike Davis deserves Most Valuable Defender props for his contributions to the effort thus far, with a pair of No. 1 gems (and thus 10 points) for his over-the-railing catches within the last few weeks.

Alex Cora's performance has also been impressive. He's recorded a Web Gem this season at three different infield positions- first base, second base, and shortstop. David Wright, Jose Reyes, Jeff Francoeur, and Luis Castillo have each contributed a pair of Gems to the scoring effort.
