NEWARK, N.J. -- Recently acquired New Jersey Nets point guard Deron Williams was a bit disappointed the Prudential Center wasn't sold out for his home debut.
Well Deron, the Rock is sold out Friday night. If only you were here to enjoy it.
Thursday afternoon, the Nets announced that Friday night’s game against high-flyer Blake Griffin and the Los Angeles Clippers was sold out. It’s just the second sellout for the Nets at their temporary home in Newark all season.
Coming into Friday night, New Jersey ranked 28th in the NBA in home attendance (13,559 fans per game, or 78.2 percent of capacity). Only the Sacramento Kings (13,521) and Indiana Pacers (13,399) are worse in that department.
The Nets only other sellout came on Feb. 12 against their Hudson River rivals, the New York Knicks. New Jersey lost that game to New York, 105-95, in front of a partisan Knicks crowd of 18,711.
“We like sellouts,” head coach Avery Johnson said. “Anytime we get a sellout, we’ll take it. We feel tonight we’ll have more of the crowd on our side, and that’s a good thing. It’s good for the community and our fans. Like I said, we are trying to accentuate the positives and this is a positive.”
If the Nets beat the Clippers, it would be their fourth consecutive victory in a row.
However, they’ll have to go at Griffin and Los Angeles without Williams, who is still in Dallas with his wife, who gave birth to the couple’s fourth child, a boy named Desmond, on Wednesday afternoon.
