Gaines 'all right' after hard fall

March, 21, 2011
NEWARK, N.J. -- With 40.5 seconds left on Monday night, New Jersey Nets backup point guard Sundiata Gaines was down.

He just wasn't out.

After getting taken down by Indiana Pacers power forward Josh McRoberts as he tried to grab a loose ball and head upcourt, Gaines fell and lay prone on the floor.

Trainer Tim Walsh and head coach Avery Johnson went out to check on Gaines. But after staying down for a short while, Gaines got up and headed down to the free throw stripe. He wound up splitting them, and his team wound up losing, but Gaines was all right.

Fresh off signing a multi-year contract with the Nets -- which includes a full guarantee for the 2011-12 season -- on Sunday, Gaines scored a career-high 18 points, grabbed six rebounds and had three assists in a 24-minute stint off the bench during the Nets' 102-98 loss to the Pacers at the Prudential Center.

"I was going for a loose ball and [McRoberts] snapped my neck back," Gaines said. "I felt a sting in the back of my neck. I laid on the floor for a little bit until it went away. I'm all right."

Gaines had a chance to be a hero down the stretch, but missed an open 3-pointer from the top of the key with 15.9 seconds left that would've tied the game at 98.

"It felt good when it left my hand, but it didn’t go down," Gaines said. "We got another attempt [Sasha Vujacic's 3] and we missed it and they went down and converted free throws. They finished the game and we didn’t."

Still, Gaines gave it his all. His seven second-quarter points allowed the Nets to extend to their largest lead, 12. But they ended up sputtering in the third quarter and met their demise in the fourth when they couldn't make big plays in crunch time.

"We lost," Gaines said. "To me it’s pointless, career-high or not. I’d rather have a win than a career-high. I’m not saying we’re gonna make the playoffs, but it would’ve been good to beat Indiana."
