Bogdanovic won't play for Nets next season

By Mike Mazzeo

Bojan Bogdanovic will not be able to play with the Nets next season because of FIBA contract rules, which prohibit him from doing so.

Before being drafted, Bogdanovic signed a three-year deal with Fenerbahce in Turkey. He has an opt-out after two years, but the Nets will try to bring him over after one.

“We knew that going in,” Nets GM Billy King said. “We knew everything, so it wasn’t something we were unsure of.”

Bogdanovic said he didn’t regret his decision to sign overseas, as it will help his game progress.

“I came here to do workouts, and expected to be drafted like all players, but I didn’t know (for certainly I’d be picked),” Bogdanovic said. “The hardest thing is I signed for three years with Fenerbahce.

“I think it’s good for me to play in Fenerbahce, and play at a high level in the Euroleague.”

Bogdanovic said he is a good shooter with the ability to put the ball on the floor. King said he was impressed with the way Bagdanovic is able to defend.

But like all young players, Bogdanovic knows he has a lot of improving to do.

He gained a lot of experience playing against Team USA at the World Championships.

His Croatian team lost by 30 points, but Bogdanovic dropped in 17 points despite being guarded by Sixers tenacious defender Andre Iguodala.

“I was very excited. It helped me a lot,” Bogdanovic said. “I was able to see where I was at against the best players in the world like Kevin Durant, so that helped me a lot.”

Of Iguodala, Bogdanovic said: “He plays so physical. He’s so strong. He’s not like the players in Europe. It was tough for me.”

Bogdanovic, 22, grew up playing soccer, but changed to basketball when coaches saw his 6-foot-8 frame.

“They said, ‘Come play basketball,’” Bogdanovic said.

Bogdanovic was a striker in soccer, which translates well in basketball, since his best asset is his ability to score.

Bogdanovic averaged 18.9 points last season, which ranked second in the entire Euroleague.
