Rapid Reaction: Nets 99, Cavaliers 96
By Mike Mazzeo
WHAT IT MEANS: Breaking news! The Nets have a winning streak! Their first of the season! Deron Williams scored a team-high 27 points and the Nets improved to 5-0 this season when he scores 24 or more, beating the Cavaliers, 99-96, on Friday night in Cleveland for their second straight win. The Nets (7-13, 5-8 road) got off to a blazing start, led by as many as 17 and shot 11-for-28 from 3-point range -- including 5-for-8 in the third quarter. They’ve now matched their road win total from all of last season (5-36). Jersey product Kyrie Irving had 21 of his career-high 32 points in the fourth quarter for the Cavaliers (7-11).
I LOVE IT: D-Will had his shot falling from the start. He finished 9-for-18 from the field and 5-for-9 from 3-point range in 39 minutes. His best play of the night came with 1:05 left in the first half, when he drove the lane, took the contact and finished off a three-point play to give the Nets a 45-33 lead. He turned it over six times, but managed to dish out 10 assists.
TURNING POINT: The Nets closed out the second quarter on an 11-4 run to take a 47-37 lead into the locker room.
DOWN WITH THE SICKNESS: Kris Humphries shook off a stomach bug to record another double-double: 18 points and 11 rebounds in 33 minutes.
HOT START: The Nets were drilling their perimeter jumpers early. They opened up 4-for-4 from the floor, made seven of their first 10 shots and scored a season-high 30 points in the first quarter on 60 percent shooting. D-Will had 10 points on five assists in the opening stanza alone. The Nets’ 30-20 lead was their largest after a first quarter this season.
SUPPORTING CAST: Starting again in place of MarShon Brooks (Achilles), Anthony Morrow dropped in 22 points in 38 minutes. And Jordan Farmar came off the bench to net 11 points.
STATS OF THE NIGHT: The Nets held the Cavs to 37.5 percent shooting in the first half. They never trailed in the game. The Cavs outscored the Nets in the paint, 50-26 and on the fastbreak, 12-2.
