In case you didn’t know ...

• It seemed like a formality that the Rangers would use one of their compliance buyouts on Richards, who had an extremely disappointing 2012-13 postseason, but GM Glen Sather decided not to pull the trigger. Richards rebounded by accumulating 51 points in the regular season and 11 more in the playoffs.

• Richards, a 13-year veteran known for his leadership and ability to distribute the puck, was demoted to the fourth line and then benched by John Tortorella for the final two games of last season’s playoffs. It was unquestionably the low point in his career. He has obviously bounced back in a big way. Tortorella ultimately regretted how he handled the situation.

• Richards won the Conn Smythe Trophy as playoff MVP for guiding the Tampa Bay Lightning to the Stanley Cup title in 2003-04. He had an NHL-high 26 points (12 goals -- seven of them game-winners). Tortorella coached the team. Martin St. Louis was a teammate.
