Former Rangers defenseman Wade Redden announced his retirement from the NHL on Thursday afternoon.

The 36-year-old Lloydminster, Saskatchewan, native played 1,023 games over 14 NHL seasons, but will best be remembered by Rangers fans for his rocky tenure on Broadway and what will go down as one of the worst deals in franchise history.

After a disappointing first two seasons in New York, Redden was essentially buried in the minors in 2010 after failing to live up to his ill-fated six-year, $39 million contract. He was bought out last January by New York following the brokering of a new collective bargaining agreement.

Redden went on to sign with St. Louis and was subsequently traded to Boston, where he played six regular-season and five playoff games for the Bruins in a lockout-shortened 2013 season, but he did not sign anywhere this past summer.
