Thanks, Hank

Had to laugh when I read the Hank Steinbrenner quotes about Derek Jeter in an Associated Press story out of Tampa today.

"As much as we want to keep everybody, we've already made these guys very, very rich, and I don't feel we owe anybody anything monetarily," Boy George told the AP. "Some of these players are wealthier than their bosses."

Geez, I wonder who made them that way?

And the biggest laugh of all is the likelihood that any problems the Yankees are encountering with Jeter now is due to what Hank did with Alex Rodriguez three years ago.

Remember that A-Rod, as expected, exercised the opt-out clause in the 10-year, $252 million contract signed with the Texas Rangers after the 2000 season and inherited by the Yankees when they acquired him just before the 2004 season?

And also remember what GM Brian Cashman had said at the time: "I can reaffirm that if Alex Rodriguez opts out of his contract, that we will not participate in his free agency. That is accurate and that is definitive."

That is, until A-Rod got Hank alone in a room and came out not only with 10 more years, but a raise.

In one fell swoop, Boy George not only undercut his GM, he probably sabotaged the Jeter negotiations, because would anyone be surprised if it is rankling to the Captain that A-Rod will be a Yankee for maybe four years longer than he will? And make more than twice the money?

If Hank Steinbrenner wants to point a finger or ask hard questions of anyone in this situation, maybe he ought to do that while facing a mirror.
