Mariano Rivera turned 41 on Monday and doesn't appear to be near the end of his career.

This is very rare. How rare? Well, when this site launched I did a story on how closers almost always go south at 40.

One of the only ones who didn't was Dennis Eckersley and he admitted he was doing it with mirrors the final three years of his career.

Here is my story from March 31, detailing how closer usually don't close well in their 40s.

Even in that story, though, Eckersley said that Mo is the best and the overall theme was that Mo is a freak of nature. But it is pretty telling that once closers get to 40, it is usually downhill. That's why the Yankees would prefer he goes year-to-year. Of course, teams wish every player could go year-to-year.
