With the Yankees taking a flyer on Russell Martin, it gives them considerable depth if they want to trade one of their young catchers for a top of the line pitcher.

I got into that here.

If a top of the line starter becomes available, opposing GMs are expected to ask for Jesus Montero. The Yankees almost dealt Montero to get Cliff Lee last July so they are willing to trade him. It is clear, though, they will only do it for someone of high quality. Martin, if healthy, gives them the depth to consider it.

Martin, who has a bad hip, must pass a physical. By the way, the Red Sox were interested in Martin, too. So one for the Yankees.
