Chavez gets the boot, Pena gets the call

5/6/2011

Eric Chavez, who suffered a broken left foot running the bases after hitting an RBI triple in the fourth inning of Thursday's loss to the Tigers, will be fitted with a boot that he will wear for two weeks before being re-evaluted. In his absence, Ramiro Pena, who was hitting .233 with two home runs and seven RBI for AAA Scranton, was recalled and added to the roster.

"He has experience here,'' Joe Girardi said to explain why the Yankees recalled Pena and not Jorge Vazquez, who is leading the International League in RBI with 27 and is tied for the lead in HRs with nine. "It definitely factors in because you really have a good idea of what he can provide for you. And the experience that he’s had, and you know he’s not going to be overwhelmed by his surroundings.''

Pena is expected to fill in at third, short and second. There was no word on when Chavez would be ready to play again, but with his foot immobilized for a minimum of two weeks, it would seem 4-6 weeks from now would be a conservative estimate for his return.
