Granderson gets it right vs. lefties

Chris Capuano got two sliders past Curtis Granderson in Granderson’s first two at-bats on Saturday.

He couldn't get a third one by him.

Granderson drilled an 82 mph Capuano slider a few rows deep into the right-field seats in the sixth inning of Saturday's Subway Series game.

It was Granderson's team-leading 15th homer of the season. He's just three behind Toronto's Jose Bautista, who hit two homers on Saturday and leads the majors with 18.

What's even more impressive?

Granderson has hit eight of his 15 home runs off left-handers.

There was a time not long ago when Granderson couldn't touch lefties. Want evidence? Granderson's previous single-season best against lefties was the five homers he hit off them in 2008. He hit just four of his 24 homers off of southpaws last season.

Now, they can't keep him in the ballpark.

"It makes it hard to get him a day off," Joe Girardi said.

Granderson's homer was one of four on the night for the Yankees, who evened the Subway Series at one game apiece with a 7-3 win on Saturday.

One of the more interesting aspects of Granderson's early-season power surge is this: He doesn't consider himself a home run hitter.

Now, if you're a Yankees fan who watched Granderson hit last year, in his first year in pinstripes, you wouldn’t consider him a home run hitter either.

He hit just .247 last season. He had 24 homers but 14 came after an early August hitting tutorial with Kevin Long that shortened his stride and took away all of his pre-swing movement at the plate.

Those adjustments may have saved Granderson's Yankees career.

"I remember the day that he and Kevin Long got together in the cage in Texas. It has been pretty magical ever since," said Alex Rodriguez, who also homered in the sixth inning on Saturday. "Give both of those guys credit."
