One down, 26 to go.

Derek Jeter drilled a Mike Pelfrey fastball back up the middle for a single to lead off the third. It’s Jeter’s third hit in the past two days and the 2,974th of his career.

He needs 26 to reach the 3,000-hit plateau. If and when he gets there, Jeter will be the first to do it in a Yankee uniform. He will be the 28th big-leaguer to hit 3,000.

Jeter is 1-for-2 today with a groundout to second in the first.

He is 11 hits shy of tying Sam Rice for 28th place on baseball’s all-time hits list.

The Captain also swiped his 326th career base on Saturday, moving him into a tie with Rickey Henderson for the top spot on the Yanks’ all-time steals list.
