Ivan Novagave up 11 hits in 6 2/3 innings. The fact that he was so hittable, but only gave up three runs might be a good sign for his maturation as a starter.

"He did grind it out," Girardi said.

Nova has been up-and-down this year. Of his 10 starts, we would count six as good ones. He is getting there, but probably hasn't yet cemented himself as a fixture in the rotation.

"He had the decent start in his first start against Minnesota and then he kind of went through a rough time for a little bit," Girardi said. "And he has seemed to have righted the ship pretty well since then. He has kept us in ever game. He has given us some distance, too. I know in Tampa [his previous time out,] it was 5 1/3 and he threw a lot of pitches, but he seemed to have made progress as a pitcher, I think."
