On this date in 1995, Derek Jeter made his major league debut in Seattle as the Yankees starting shortstop, hitting ninth in the lineup and going 0-for-5.

Yankees manager Buck Showalter told the New York media that day:

"I don't want to get into what Derek has to do to stay up. We want him to relax and do what he's capable of doing. We hope Derek makes us a better club."

It's fair to say he's done that and then some. Here are a few notes and tidbits on what Jeter has done, courtesy of ESPN Stats and Information.

1: Jeter has 2,979 hits since May 29, 1995. That's the most of any player. Who happens to be second? Jeter's teammate, Alex Rodriguez, with exactly 2,700. Jeter's ex-teammate, Johnny Damon, is third with 2,622.

2: Jeter made two assists in that game, both on double plays, the first as the relay man on a 1-6-3 twin-killing hit into by a man who played play a prominent role in the Yankees championship run later in his career, Luis Sojo.

3: Jeter is now the Yankees all-time leader in at-bats, hits, stolen bases, ground-ball double plays, and time hit by a pitch. With 2,343 games played, he is closing in on Mickey Mantle's team mark of 2,401.

4: The Yankees win-loss record at the time of Jeter's recall? They were 13-14 (the season started late that year because of the labor dispute that also cancelled the 1994 World Series). The Yankees have never finished a season under .500 with Jeter on their roster.

5: Jeter's first game was actually quite a game. The Yankees blew leads of 5-1 and 7-4, falling on a walk-off home run by Rich Amaral in the 12th inning. But we're guessing not too many people other than Amaral (and maybe Jeter) remember that fact.
