The Yankees selected Dante Bichette Jr., whose father had a long playing career in the majors.
The pick was the 51st overall.
Bichette Jr is a 6-1, 205-pound outfielder from Orangewood Christian in Florida.
"Dante is one of the guys in this draft we thought had an impact bat and the potential to hit for big power in the middle of the order,” Yankees Vice President of Amateur Scouting Damon Oppenheimer in a statement. “He’s someone with an advanced makeup and work ethic who possesses the desire and drive to be a special major leaguer.”
Bichette Sr. and Joe Girardi were teammates with the Rockies in the '90s.
The Yankees picked up the pick when Javy Vazquez signed with the Marlins. The Yankees lost their first-round pick after they signed Rafael Soriano.
