Fausto Carmona said on Saturday morning that he was just trying to pitch inside when he hit Mark Teixeira in the back on Friday night, igniting a near-brawl in the Yankees-Indians game.
“I was pitching away and I started to pitch in,” he said.
He said he wanted to switch his “plan” against Teixeira, which is to pitch him away.
Teixeira took exception to being drilled in the back and started jawing at Carmona. Benches cleared and Joe Girardi and Indians manager Manny Acta were jawing at one another.
He called the reaction afterward “part of the moment, part of the game.”
It was the second time this week Teixeira had been hit. He also took a Jon Lester fastball to the inside of his right knee on Tuesday against Boston. That HBP forced him to miss the game.
