Just got off the phone with GM Brian Cashman, who told me that, contrary to all the signals Joe Girardi sent out after last night's game, Derek Jeter will be in tonight's lineup against the Indians. Maybe Jeter's career numbers vs. Justin Masterson, tonight's starter, had something to do with it -- 5-for-12, .417 -- maybe Jeter made a strong argument in his own defense, or maybe Girardi just realized (rightly) that if Jeter gets a hit or two tonight, it would greatly increase his chances of getting No. 3000 at home over the weekend before the All-Star break and the two city road trip that follows it. I just wrote a full story on this that will be up on the site soon.
